“…7 Since then, much effort has been made along this line. For example, Van den Boomgaard et al 8,9 synthesized a bulk composite of CFO ͑cobalt ferrite͒ with BaTiO 3 , but the ME yield was ϳ50 times lower than that predicted theoretically. The CFO-lead-zirconatetitanate ͑PZT͒ multilayered structures prepared by Harshe et al 10 showed an ␣ E ϳ75 mV/cm Oe, which was still much lower than the predicted value.…”

“…The (static) effect, first observed in antiferromagnetic Cr 2 O 3, is weak in single-phase compounds [2]. But a composite of piezomagnetic-piezoelectric phases is also expected to be magnetoelectric since α = δP/δH is a "product-property" that results from magnetostriction induced deformation and piezoelectric charge generation [3][4][5]. We are interested in the dynamic ME effect; for an ac magnetic field δH applied to a biased composite, one measures the induced voltage δV.…”

“…Composites of interest in the past were bulk samples of nickel ferrite or cobalt ferrite with BaTiO 3 or lead zirconate titanate (PZT) [ 3,4]. Powders of the two oxides are mixed and sintered.…”

“…Such structures when placed in an external ac magnetic field δH undergo deformation of the magnetic layer due to magnetostriction, resulting in an electrical polarization of the dielectric layer due to piezoelectric effect [6,7]. The ac electrical field δE produced in the structure is a "productproperty" and is proportional to the piezomagnetic and piezoelectric coefficients of the constituent phases [8].…”
