An in silico structural approach to characterize human and rainbow trout estrogenicity of mycotoxins: Proof of concept study using zearalenone and alternariol

Abstract: The mycotoxins zearalenone and alternariol may contaminate food and feed raising toxicological concerns due to their estrogenicity. Inter-species differences in their toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics may occur depending on evolution of taxa-specific traits. As a proof of principle, this manuscript investigates the comparative toxicodynamics of zearalenone, its metabolites (alpha-zearalenol and beta-zearalenol), and alternariol with regards to estrogenicity in humans and rainbow trout. An in silico structural … Show more

“…Acute toxicity with AOH is low, however, genotoxic and oestrogenic effects have been reported in vitro [ 115 ]. In fish, Dellafiora et al [ 116 ] reported low oestrogenic activity of AOH on trout in silico.…”

“…The demonstrated properties of ZEN offer the possibility of its practical use, but the application of ZEN on a larger scale should be monitored due to the potential environmental risk (Videmann et al 2008;Gajecka et al 2012;Gao et al 2018;Dellafiora et al 2020). Although zearalenone with toxic properties is present in the environment, it poses a potential risk to animal and human health only if it is absorbed in large quantities or during the long-term exposure (Zinedine et al 2007).…”
