An improved procedure for obtaining and maintaining well characterized partial water saturation states on concrete samples to be used for mass transport tests

Abstract: A conditioning procedure is proposed allowing to install into the concrete specimens any selected value of water saturation degree with homogeneous moisture distribution. This is achieved within the least time and the minimum alteration of the concrete specimens. The protocol has the following steps: obtaining basic drying data at 50ºC (water absorption capacity and drying curves); unidirectional drying of the specimens at 50ºC until reaching the target saturation degree values; redistribution phase in closed … Show more

“…Also the essential effects of equalization of the humidity distribution in the cross section of specimens were shown. Similar methodological observations resulted from [17], although related to the normal weight concrete. The method of preparation of 100 mm cylindrical specimens with uniformly distributed RH, using the surface RH measurement, is also shown in [18].…”

“…The different humidity circumstances can be controlled by saturated salt solutions [18]. For ''SD'' preconditioning, the sample (often saturated) is firstly dried in an oven at a relatively high temperature to get a preassigned loss of water and then conducted with a moisture redistribution step in order to gain homogeneous moisture distribution [19]. The two approaches were evaluated at the beginning of the sample preconditioning.…”
