An improved model for estimating heat release rate in horizontal cable tray fires in open space

Abstract: Electric cable fires in nuclear power plants could be disastrous and have to be studied carefully for safety and economic considerations. Based on the results of previous work on large-scale and bench-scale cable fire testing, the Flame Spread over Horizontal Cable Trays model was modified and improved to estimate the heat release rate of large-scale cable fires using bench-scale measured data. The heat release rate per unit area measured in the cone calorimeter experiment is taken as the input, to avoid intro… Show more

“…The average values of the highest temperature of the two-cores, three-cores, and four-cores cables are calculated and the results are 554.8 • C, 548 • C, 555.2 • C, respectively. This is different from the results of Huang et al [2,36], who found that the average value of highest temperature rises as the number of cores increases. The difference in results could be attributed to the difference in experimental conditions.…”

“…Another fitting parameter is the width of the burning material that can be considered as the product of the cable diameter and the number of cables (Huang et al 20 ) or that can be taken as the width of the tray and can be doubled to incorporate the burning of the two sides (upper and lower) of the tray (Zavaleta et al 14 ).…”

“…There have been some valuable studies focusing on the fire behaviors of multiple-layer cable tray in open space. 4–11 The Fire Performance of Electric Cables project involved both experiments and numerical modeling approved by DG XII of the European Commission (Research and Development). 4,5 The links between different scales of cable fire experiments were studied.…”

“…6 Its primary aim is to provide data for the development of fire models that can predict the heat release rate (HRR) of a cable fire. Based on the cable fire experiments with vertical stacks of trays with one to three layers of cables and the cable tray fire experiments with data available in the literature, Huang et al 7 developed an improved Flame Spread over Horizontal Cable Trays model to estimate the HRR of large-scale cable fires using bench-scale measured data. The propagation d’un incendie pour des scénarios multi-locaux élémentaires (PRISME) project 8 carried out fire experiments in confined and mechanically ventilated compartments representative of fire scenarios in the nuclear industry.…”
