Torque ripple of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) will result in the distortion of current waveform and the load flexibility of spiral torsion spring (STS) will affect the control performance of driving system. This study focuses on a new control problem of simultaneous suppression of PMSM's torque ripple and flexible load's vibration. First, the Lagrange equation is used to establish the dynamic model of STS to describe its vibration mode. The overall model of STS directly derived by PMSM under stator current vector orientation is built. Then, based on the magnetic co-energy model of electromagnetic torque of PMSM, the constraint relation of optimal stator harmonic current under the condition of torque ripple minimisation is derived, and the controller based on stator current oriented closed-loop I/f control to suppress load vibration and torque ripple simultaneously is presented through backstepping control. A wide speed range identification method based on the least-square algorithm with a forgetting factor is also designed. The simulation and experiment show that the speed identification algorithm can estimate the speed accurately in a wide range. The proposed control scenario improves control performance, smoothes current waveform and inhibits torque ripple and load vibration effectively.

This paper analyzes primary disturbance-causing factors inside the flexible solar array drive system based on an electromechanical model. Two feed-forward input compensation drive strategies, derived by decomposing moment component and hypothesizing motion trajectory, respectively, are proposed to weaken the effect of disturbances.Analytic results indicate that the cogging effect of the hybrid stepper motor is a significant factor affecting angular velocity fluctuation, thus generating disturbances. Both of the proposed disturbance-mitigation drive strategies improve angular velocity stability and disturbance torque stability without degrading the pointing accuracy of solar array or altering the original design state of drive assemblies. The effectiveness of disturbance mitigation, however, gradually degrades as cogging torque amplitude errors increase in number. Drive strategy which utilizes the hypothetical motion trajectory method is slightly preferable in terms of disturbance mitigation performance.

The optimization of hybrid stepper motors and similar special machine geometries can not be performed effectively due to a large number of elements which follow from the fact, that the dimension of the air gap is tiny against the whole geometry and that it is necessary to model a relative big part of the machine. The presented paper shows how to model hybrid stepper motors with finite element method more effectively. Based on a certain machine, the limits and problems using full 3D models are identified. Further attempts with 2D models follow. It becomes clear that, depending on the features of special software, these 2D models can only be used to analyze certain aspects like detent torque or holding torque around small stationary working points. The biggest problem is to rotate the rotor part against a stator with impressed current.Therefore a possibility has been searched to model a full working machine without the disadvantages of a full 3D model. A solution was found with a reduced 3D model. This is the quintessence of the paper. We also investigated which modeling depth has to be performed. It will become clear which boundary conditions have to be taken into account to reduce the model. Moreover the theoretical background which is necessary to do the reduction is given. It can be seen, that the reduced model can be used to get reliable results for an optimization. To conclude a comparison between the different models and results shows how useful the reduced model will be, if optimization or investigation of such a machine shall be done.
