An improved approach for measuring immersion freezing in large droplets over a wide temperature range

Abstract: Immersion freezing (ice nucleation by particles immersed in supercooled water) is a key process for forming ice in mixed-phase clouds. Immersion freezing experiments with particles in microliter-sized (millimeter-sized) water droplets are often applied to detecting very small numbers of ice nucleating particles (INPs). However, the application of such large droplets remains confined to the detection of INPs active at temperatures much higher than the homogeneous freezing limit, because of artifacts related to … Show more

“…1; more details in Supplement). A cold-stage is a dropfreezing apparatus, on which droplets are deposited onto a cooling surface and the temperature at which they freeze is observed (Vali, 1971a). This technique is commonly used today to assess the activation temperature of INPs immersed in droplets.…”

“…The Cryogenic Refrigerator Applied to Freezing Test (CRAFT) device has been described in detail by Tobo (2016). CRAFT is a classical cold-plate device akin to the DFT and the CS instruments, but it involves procedures to assure sample isolation, primarily from the cold-plate surface using a layer of Vaseline ® .…”

“…Immersion mode freezing was tested using a drop freezing assay (DFA) cold plate apparatus. This cold plate technique was based on previous but slightly modified apparatuses Stopelli et al, 2014;Tobo, 2016;. For brevity, we call this system the NOAA drop freezing cold plate (DFCP).…”

“…Copper discs (76 mm in diameter, 3.2 mm thick) were prepared by cleaning with isopropanol (99.5 % ACS Grade, LabChem. Inc.), then coated with a thin layer of petrolatum (100 %, Vaseline ® ) (Bowers et al, 2009;Tobo, 2016). Three of the spots on the filter had visible aerosol deposits that were successfully transferred to the UPW (i.e., based on visual identification).…”
