An Improved Adaptive-Torque-Gain MPPT Control for Direct-Driven PMSG Wind Turbines Considering Wind Farm Turbulences

Abstract: Maximum power point tracking (MPPT) plays an important role in increasing the efficiency of a wind energy conversion system (WECS). In this paper, three conventional MPPT methods are reviewed: power signal feedback (PSF) control, decreased torque gain (DTG) control, and adaptive torque gain (ATG) control, and their potential challenges are investigated. It is found out that the conventional MPPT method ignores the effect of wind turbine inertia and wind speed fluctuations, which lowers WECS efficiency. Accordi… Show more

“…The equivalent wind speed oscillations of wind turbine are produced by turbulence, wind shear and tower shadow. 21,22 So the oscillation frequencies of equivalent wind speed are distributed in below 0.1Hz, the 3p and the higher, such as 6p, 9p, 12p, etc. The rotational speed of MW class variable speed wind turbine is 5 to 25 revolutions per minute generally, 19,20 so the 3p is in 0.25 to 1.25 Hz.…”

“…This method harvest more power for higher wind speed as well as increase overall wind power. Zhang et al [46] proposed an improved adaptive torque gain (IATG) approach to determine the optimal gain coefficient to extract maximum power. This method overcome the drawback of ageing effect in decreased torque gain (DTG) and direction misleading problem with the adaptive torque gain (ATG) in rapidly changing wind speed.…”

“…For an electric power grid that has a high level of wind power penetration, variable-speed wind turbine generators (WTGs)-e.g., doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WTGs and full converter-based WTGs-perform a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation that extracts the maximum energy from the wind at different wind speeds [2,3]. However, this operation adversely impacts frequency stability [4,5].…”
