Nowadays, Java is one of the world’s most used object-oriented programming languages for its dependability and portability. To assist the self-studies of novice students, we have developed the Java programming learning assistance system (JPLAS). JPLAS offers several types of exercise problems for different difficulties, including the grammar-concept understanding problem (GUP), the mistake correction problem (MCP), the element fill-in-blank problem (EFP), and the phrase fill-in-blank problem (PFP), where a question asks to answer the corresponding keyword or phrase in the given source code. Unfortunately, some students cannot solve them well as the difficulty level is ascending. In this paper, to help such students, we propose a hint function that will show the first or more characters of each correct answer word in the answer interface on a web browser for JPLAS, when requested. The use of this function by a student can be traced by a teacher to analyze the performance and problem difficulty. For evaluations, we generated three instances for GUP, MCP, EFP, and PFP respectively, and assigned them to junior students taking the Java programming course in Okayama University, Japan. Their answer results found that the proposal is effective in helping students solve exercise problems in JPLAS, but the thinking time needs to be adjusted for PFP.

To assist Java programming learning of novice students, we have developed the web-based Java programming learning assistant system (JPLAS). JPLAS provides several types of exercise problems to cultivate code reading/writing skills at various levels. In JPLAS, the code writing problem (CWP) asks a student to write a source code that will pass the test code given in the assignment where the correctness is verified by running them on JUnit. In this paper, to reduce the teacher load at marking process, we present the answer code validation program that verifies all the source codes from a lot of students for each assignment at a time and reports the number of passing tests for each source code in the CSV file. Besides, to test a source code with various input data, we implement the test data generation algorithm that identifies the data type, generates a new data, and replaces it for each test data in the test code. Furthermore, to verify the correctness of the implemented procedure in the source code, we introduce the intermediate state testing in the test code. For evaluations, we applied the proposal to source codes and test codes in a Java programming course in Okayama university, Japan, and confirmed the validity and effectiveness.

This paper presents the development process of a REST API for a Human Resource Information System (HRIS) focusing on employee referral management. The API was developed using the Express JS framework and Node.js, leveraging their powerful capabilities for efficient web application development. The HRIS serves as a centralized platform for managing employee referrals, tracking candidate progress, and optimizing talent acquisition. The article provides insights into the methodology, key features, and advantages of using the Express JS framework and Node.js for building such an HRIS. The results of the study indicate that the Express JS and Node.js frameworks have successfully developed a REST API for HRIS in the domain of employee referral management. This is evident from the black box testing results, which show valid outcomes for each tested request and response in every API endpoint.
