An Impact of the Recent Developments in Coating Materials and Techniques on the Corrosion Response of AZ91D Alloy: A Review

Abstract: AZ91D, a die‐casted alloy, offers several benefits (better saltwater corrosion resistance, suitable castability, and good atmospheric stability) over other grades of magnesium alloy. However, it cannot overcome the challenging requirements of advanced applications in its current form. Extensive research in coating technologies is crucial in enhancing the performance of AZ91D alloy in highly corrosive environments (coastal and marine, industrial, farm, etc.). The high corrosion resistance of AZ91D for various a… Show more

“…Since the AZ91D is a popular magnesium alloy that offers several advantages (like better castability, good corrosion resistance, enhanced creep resistance, etc.) over the other grades of magnesium alloys, [4,5] it is chosen in this study.Severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques are employed in recent studies to improve surface properties, where alloys are processed to achieve significant grain refinement, enhanced mechanical properties, and improved performance. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), cryogenic rotary swaging, constrained groove pressing, shot peening, high-pressure torsion (HPT), and surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) are some of the important SPD techniques.…”
