An Immunological Approach to the Evaluation of Welfare in Holstein Frisian cattle

Abstract: Clinical immunological and haematological parameters, along with clinical conditions and growth rate, were studied in 413 male Holstein Frisian calves introduced into a large centre for genetic selection in different seasons of the year. Abnormalities were revealed by the laboratory tests in the great majority of calves after transportation stress, a general tendency to the restoration of physiological values being evident thereafter. Laboratory parameters were highly correlated with disease conditions: with t… Show more

“…Serum lysozyme was measured by the lyso-plate assay (Osserman and Lawlor, 1966) and its concentration value was expressed in µg/ml.The serum bactericidal activity was valued following conventional procedures (Amadori et al, 1997). Statistical analysis were performed using the Student's T-test and expressed as mean ±stan-dard deviation (SD).…”

“…Whenever animals are forced to deal with severe, prolonged coping reactions with a considerable energy expense, welfare suffers and a serious depression of the immune system results as one of the negative outcomes. In this scenario, clinical immunology tests (complement, lysozyme, serum bactericidal activity) reveal a substantial decrease in the ability of the immune system to deal with environmental pathogens, which paves the way to opportunistic microbial infections (Amadori, 1997). Interestingly, the above functions relate to the innate immune system, which does not have memory and acts irrespective of antigenic specificities by recognition of conserved microbial PAMPs.…”
