“…Interestingly, only 20% of the OLP patients in the present study fulfilled the immunohistochemical criteria for OLP, and no relationship could be found between the clinical and histologic diagnosis of OLP, and the immunohistochemically verified diagnosis of OLP. Previous studies have presented fibrinogen deposition in the BMZ in 70-100% of patients (19)(20)(21)23). One explanation for this variation in reaction might be the use of different clinical criteria and different immunohistochemical methods.…”

“…The immunohistochemical methods used in most similar studies have been direct or indirect immunofluorescence. In only one study (23) has the same method been used as in the present study. In a pilot study, we have controlled the reaction specificity between the PAP method used in this study with paraffin-wax-embedded material and the indirect immunofluorescence method with fresh frozen material.…”

“…Although several molecular biologic markers have been suggested to be useful as an additional diagnostic tool in diagnosing OLP, there seems not to be enough scientific evidence yet to apply those as a ‘golden standard’(9–13). Direct immunofluorescent techniques have also been described as additional tool in the diagnostic assessment of OLP (14–20). Although some immunofluorescent findings are found to be highly characteristic of OLP, such as the presence of fibrin deposition at the mucosal–submucosal junction, within vessels and cytoid bodies, these findings seem to lack specificity.…”

“…La heterogenicidad de los resultados obtenidos nos indica el carácter inespecífico de los depósitos. Se explicaría la presencia de inmunoglobulinas como una reacción policlonal inespecífica secundaria a la respuesta celular mediada por los linfocitos T (126).…”
