An Imaging Survey of Early‐Type Barred Galaxies

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a high-resolution imaging survey, using both ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope images, of a complete sample of nearby barred S0-Sa galaxies in the field, with a particular emphasis on identifying and measuring central structures within the bars: secondary bars, inner disks, nuclear rings and spirals, and off-plane dust. “…Unsharp masking suppresses large-scale, low-frequency variations and emphasizes small-scale brightness variations. Examples of how useful this technique can be for galaxies observed with HST can be found in, e.g., Erwin & Sparke (2003). To produce our unsharp masks, we smoothed the original data by convolving it with a Gaussian function of width ¼ 5 pixels and then subtracted this from the original image.…”

In the following years the isophotal analysis technique made it possible to detect secondary bars in optical (Wozniak et al 1995;Erwin & Sparke 1999;Erwin & Sparke 2003) and NIR images of barred galaxies (Friedli et al 1996;Jungwiert et al 1997;Laine et al 2002).
