Introduction and purpose: The mass media deal with, among others creating the image of health care. Most often, information published in the media is negative because it aims to show sensation and increase the interest of recipients. To present the perception of the media image of health care in society. Material and method: The research was carried out using the author's questionnaire. 210 responses were collected and analyzed. Results: The study involved men (29%) and women (71%). Majority (89.52%) of respondents were in favor of an unfavorable or neutral overall image of health care created by the media. Information reached almost 70% of respondents on long queues for visits to specialists, half a year or more. The respondents (83.81%) also drew attention to references spreading in publishers about the lack of staff among medical workers. However, most people (69.52%) did not share the healthcare model shaped by the "fourth authority" based on their experience. Conclusions: Based on the analysis, a negative media impact on the healthcare picture was confirmed. The data suggests that society does not quite agree with the media image of healthcare.

The social perception of the nursing profession in Poland is profoundly affected by social stereotypes that may discourage young people from entering the profession and lead to prejudice towards nurses. During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses gained visibility, which caused the social image of nurses to likewise grow. In this study, we explore nurses’ experiences with respect to how the COVID-19 pandemic influenced the social image of nursing. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen hospital nurses. Three major themes emerged: (1) social attitudes towards nurses during the pandemic, (2) nurses’ perception of the impact of the pandemic on the social image of the nursing profession and (3) the impact of the pandemic on nurses’ mental health. Although the pandemic promoted the image of nursing to the general public, nurses were disappointed that in the face of the healthcare crisis and the constant threat, they had to struggle with difficult working conditions and professional, social and economic recognition. This study therefore stresses the duty of policy makers to undertake a systemic approach to improving the organisation of health care and increase nurses’ safety by providing them with a safe working environment and prepare them better for the next health crisis.

W Polsce przypada średnio 2,4 lekarza w przeliczeniu na tysiąc mieszkańców (Eurostat 2020) i tym samym Polska zajmuje ostatnie miejsce w Unii Europejskiej pod względem liczby lekarzy (OECD 2019). Podobnie niekorzystnie wyglądają dane dotyczące liczby pielęgniarek i położnych. Problem ten wydaje się wyjątkowo palący w kontekście trwającego kryzysu epidemiologicznego COVID-19, który dodatkowo obnażył braki kadrowe w polskiej ochronie zdrowia i niejako „zmusił” władze do podjęcia działań mających na celu zapełnienie tych luk z pomocą medyków obcokrajowców. Działania te mogą budzić sprzeczne emocje, ponieważ będąc pracownikami ściśle poszukiwanymi na rynku pracy, medycy z zagranicy są jednocześnie imigrantami, a stosunek do przybyszów polaryzuje obecnie polskie społeczeństwo. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza przedstawień medialnych wysoko wykwalifikowanych migrantów, wykonujących zawody lekarskie lub pielęgniarskie, którzy zdecydowali się mieszkać i pracować w Polsce. Praca odpowiada na pytania, w jaki sposób przekazy medialne z polskiej prasy tworzą obraz tych grup oraz jakie czynniki na niego wpływają. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań można stwierdzić, że wizerunek medyka pochodzącego z zagranicy nie został utrwalony w polskich mediach, choć wraz z wybuchem epidemii COVID-19 nastąpił wzrost zainteresowania tym zagadnieniem. Problematyka migracji pracowników sektora medycznego jest rozpatrywana głównie w kontekście niedoborów kadrowych w systemie ochrony zdrowia, a opisom zazwyczaj nie towarzyszą silne emocje dotyczące migrantów. Abstract In Poland, on average, there are 2.4 doctors per 1,000 population (Eurostat 2020), and thus Poland ranks last in the European Union in terms of the number of doctors per capita (OECD 2019). The data on the number of nurses and midwives look similarly unfavourable. This problem seems to be highly pressing in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 epidemiological crisis, which additionally exposed staff shortages in Polish health care and somehow “forced” the authorities to take action to fill these gaps with the help of foreign medics. The emergence of such a category of migrants may arouse contradictory emotions as, despite the obvious need to employ them, the attitude towards newcomers currently polarises Polish society. The aim of this article is to analyse the media representations of highly qualified migrant medics (doctors and nurses) who decided to live and work in Poland. The article explains how the media coverage creates the image of various groups of highly qualified medical migrants in Poland and what factors influence this image. The analysis results show that the image of foreign doctors has not yet been sufficiently recorded in the media, but with the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic there has been a growing interest in this issue. However, the migration of workers in the medical sector is analysed mainly in the context of staff shortages in the health service, and the descriptions are usually not accompanied by strong emotions towards migrants.
