An ILI Mitigating Modulation Scheme for Molecular MIMO Communications

Abstract: M ultiple-input-m ultiple-output (MIMO) approach is recently proposed to the diffusion-based m olecular communication realm in order to enhance communication performance. One of the m ost promising approaches of m olecular MIMO, spatial m ultiplexing (SMUX), transm its parallel streams of data to achieve an increased throughput. Unfortunately, the performance of SMUX is lim ited by a high error floor due to severe interlink interference (ILI). Inspired by the relatively more sparse transm ission strategy of th… Show more

“…It is shown therein that SMUX-based molecular MIMO faces high inter-link interference (ILI) in addition to ISI. The ILI is especially severe in SMUX that uses BCSK [52], [53]. To remedy this issue, [53] proposes to introduce time interleaving and avoid simultaneous emissions from the transmitter antennas.…”

“…To demonstrate the importance and applicability of the derived channel model, we now describe a system with a receiver consisting of multiple FARs arranged in a UCA fashion [11], [12], [20], [21]. We first derive the hitting probability expressions for this SIMO system in the next section.…”

“…In MIMO system, there is not only ISI but also ILI in different pairs of transmitters and receivers and as a result the modulation methods need more considerations. [20] proposes a spatial multiplexing mitigation modulation method based on pulse position modulation to mitigate ILI. In [21], a new modulation method for MIMO system called Molecular Space Shift Keying(MSSK) is proposed and it can combat both ISI and ILI effectively.…”
