An extended superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator flap transfer for a relatively‐small breast reconstruction after total mastectomy

Abstract: Superficial circumflex iliac artery (SCIA) perforator (SCIP) flap has been applied in various reconstructions. Unlike traditional groin flap, SCIP flap has a longer pedicle and can be used as a chimeric flap for complex reconstruction. By utilizing both the superficial and the deep branches of the SCIA, a SCIP flap can be raised as an extended large bulky flap. Although there are many articles reporting usefulness of SCIP flap, there is no case reporting a large SCIP flap transfer for breast reconstruction aft… Show more

“…Moreover, they have highlighted the anatomical variability present in the deep perforators of the SCIP flap and the imperative for supermicrosurgical techniques to facilitate their effective utilization [ 21 ]. Concurrently, Yamamoto et al have successfully employed both superficial and deep perforators of the SCIA to augment the SCIP flap, creating a large flap (23 × 15 cm) intended for breast reconstruction, which necessitated a considerable volume of tissue [ 22 ].…”

“…The SCIP flap has been previously described as a free flap for breast augmentation, partial and total autologous breast reconstruction. 1 2 3 4 However, there are no articles reporting its use for an NAC reconstruction.…”

“…Although there are some publications reporting the usefulness of the SCIP flap for autologous breast reconstruction despite its low volume, 1 2 3 4 no article reports the use of the SCIP flap for a partial breast and NAC reconstruction in a previous implant-based breast reconstruction.…”

“…For decades, surgical resection was the standard treatment for breast cancer. The treatment has experienced an evolutionary process to breast conserving therapy from extended mastectomy [ 3 6 ], radical mastectomy [ 7 ], and modified radical mastectomy [ 8 , 9 ]. The alterative minimal invasive and noninvasive techniques have brought light to breast conserving therapy, which is a preferred therapy over mastectomy.…”
