An Exploratory Study of the Community Impacts of Service-Learning

Abstract: Research on community impacts from service-learning has been scarce, yet this area is worth exploring in order to understand how and why service-learning can make a difference. The current research sought to validate a conceptual framework (Lau & Snell, 2020), which categorizes the impacts of service-learning on community partner organizations (CPOs) and on end-beneficiaries. Under the framework, impacts on end-beneficiaries can arise directly from service-learning interventions, but can also arise indirec… Show more

“…In service learning, participants will take into account the social context and circumstances of people and environment in which the learning is taking place (McCarthy, Damrongmanee, Pushpalatha, Chithra, & Yamamoto, 2005). Although the practice of service learning has been widely adopted in higher education institutions, including those in Asia (Lau, Chan, Yeung, & Snell, 2021; Ma, Chiu, & Wei, 2019; McCarthy, 2009; McCarthy et al , 2005), few service-learning studies examined how the learning process affects other stakeholders involved in the LO as conceptualized in LO 2.0. One of the biggest challenges in examining service-learning is incorporating students who have a diverse set of experience (Chong, 2014) and our case study contributes to the service-learning literature by involving students who are diverse not only in terms of professional experience but also from the cultural, age and values perspectives.…”
