An Exploratory Study of Resident Burnout and Wellness

Abstract: Significantly more research is needed to further define and measure wellness. Program directors should consider multiple burnout and wellness factors associated with burnout (or its absence) when designing treatment interventions. The aim should be to identify and bolster wellness factors that protect from burnout while minimizing the stressors that cause it.

“…Other important contributions related to bridging the gaps identified in this topic are: the evaluation of medical residents across 41 different specialties (highlighting the wide range of these areas); the high response rate achieved, which may, to a certain extent, confirm the representativeness of the data; and the empirical demonstration using instruments that assess social skills as possible protective factors against the burnout syndrome in medical residents, unlike other studies that focus predominantly on the risk factors for burnout in this population (Eckleberry-Hunt et al, 2009;Prins et al, 2007b).…”

“…Several prior studies have attempted to determine the potential risk factors for burnout among residents. Excessive work hours [6,17,18] certain personality types [19,20] and depression [18,21,22] are among the correlates linked to higher rates of burnout. However, findings in the literature are inconsistent [6,23].…”
