An exploratory study of fit and size issues with mass customized men's jackets using 3D body scan and virtual try-on technology

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the potential for mass customization with fit and size issues using 3D technology in men's jacket development. The study tested a fit mass customization process that employed 3D body scanning and 3D virtual simulation technology and the results are summarized as follows. First, the fit evaluation for the final virtual jacket was improved from the first virtual jacket. Second, during the virtual jacket evaluation process, the participants made various requests to change … Show more

“…Three-dimensional body scanning technology is a promising way to improve apparel fit and size issue with mass customization (Senanayake and Little, 2010; Sohn et al , 2020). Mass customization can benefit plus size target market once their body shape scrutinized by the industry (Hudson and Hwang, 2020).…”

“…3D body scanning technology is revealed to be an innovative tool for future tailors and men's wear industry, especially targeted at young male consumers. Study revealed the potential for the use this technology for menswear apparel construction [28]. Precision of 3D Body scanning technology have been studied by Romeo in 2017 [29] by using four different infrared depth sensor machines: Fit3D Proscanner; Styku; TC2 KX-16; and Size Stream.…”

“…However, this study focuses on skirt and slacks [2]. Jae-Min Sohn et al explored the potentiality for men's jacket in mass customization in terms of fit and dimensions, they developed systematic approach for testing apparel fit by 3D body scan and virtual try-on technology, whereas this study pay attention on whole appearance of jacket without consideration of specific parts of jacket like armhole and sleeves [3]. More deeply all criteria of fit evaluation were considered in last year publication, V E Kuzmichev show the result of how to get well-designed and well-fitted clothing [4].…”
