An Exploratory Psychometric Network Analysis of Loneliness Scales in a Sample of Older Adults.

Abstract: Objectives: To examine the relationships within and between commonly used measures ofloneliness to determine the suitability of the measures in older adults. Further, todetermine items of key importance to the measurement of loneliness. Methods: Data wereobtained from 350 older adults via completion of an online survey. Four measures ofloneliness were completed. These were the UCLA Loneliness scale (Version 3), the de JongGierveld Loneliness Scale, the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (ShortVer… Show more

“…This item assesses loneliness in the most face-valid way possible, and closely matches the UK National Health Service's definition of loneliness (Veazie et al, 2019). Direct single-item measures of loneliness have been supported by the literature (Thompson & Pollet, 2023).…”

“…For instance, if limited healthcare access is identified as an overlapping node between the ‘socioeconomic disadvantages’ community and the ‘mental health epidemic’ community, limited healthcare access could be a gateway to co‐occurring mental health issues or factors that can mutually exacerbate both communities—a point for intervention. Clique percolation has been recently used in psychometric network analysis, where the overlapping node is interpreted as the item that shows high ‘cross‐loading’ on non‐targeted dimensions of the scale (Thompson & Pollet, 2021). However, to the best of the author's knowledge, clique percolation has not been applied in health disparity research.…”
