Digitalization has been identified as one of the major trends changing society and business. Digitalization causes changes for companies due to the adoption of digital technologies in the organization or in the operation environment. This paper discusses digitalization from the viewpoint of diverse case studies carried out to collect data from several companies, and a literature study to complement the data. This paper describes the first version of the digital transformation model, derived from synthesis of these industrial cases, explaining a starting point for a systematic approach to tackle digital transformation. The model is aimed to help companies systematically handle the changes associated with digitalization. The model consists of four main steps, starting with positioning the company in digitalization and defining goals for the company, and then analyzing the company’s current state with respect to digitalization goals. Next, a roadmap for reaching the goals is defined and implemented in the company. These steps are iterative and can be repeated several times. Although company situations vary, these steps will help to systematically approach digitalization and to take the steps necessary to benefit from it.

Past, ongoing, and future debate on the interplay between internationalization and digitalization

The interplay between internationalization and digitalization (IDI) is a relatively young research domain that is finding its way into numerous academic journals, which motivates us to systematically portray the proceedings and evolutions of this interplay over time, analyze its methodological and theoretical background and, more importantly, provide insights to guide future research on these phenomena. Combining qualitative and quantitative approaches, we analyze 68 peer-reviewed international business and management papers to explore the structure of knowledge production and identify the emerging trends. Our research reveals four key stages of the debate: (a) how IDI influences interorganizational aspects (1996–2004), (b) how digitalization influences the balance between perceived risk and returns in internationalization (2005–2009), (c) how digital advances and available internationalization channel alternatives influence IDI (2010–2014), and (d) how IDI influences intraorganizational aspects (2015–2019). Moreover, our analysis reveals heterogeneity across theoretical perspectives, methods, and research themes over the years. Finally, we identify theoretical and methodological challenges related to IDI research.

The post-industrial society is transforming into a smart society, in which smart technologies control all the main processes. The study aims at proposing indicators for assessing the spread of smart technologies in various spheres of human life with due regard to the introduction of open innovations. The methodological basis of the study was an approach focused on the study of the processes of development of open innovations and the smartization of society with the involvement of special methods. Special methods include document analysis based on a literature review conducted by the authors, content analysis using multiple correspondence analysis and the cluster analysis method. This is the first study to use the Smart Progress Index like other social development indices, including the Social Progress Index, the Physical Quality Life Index and the Sustainable Economic Welfare Index. The Smart Progress Index will determine the state of society and the level of its development in technological, geopolitical, socio-economic, demographic and environmental terms. There are three indicators of the Smart Progress Index: 1) the scale of smart technologies; 2) the conditions and intensity of introducing smart technologies; 3) the results of smart technologies. Each aspect includes several components represented by seventeen indicators.
