An exploratory analysis of mobile development issues using stack overflow

Abstract: Abstract-Question & answer (Q&A) websites, such as Stack Overflow (SO), are widely used by developers to find and provide answers to technical issues and concerns in software development. Mobile development is not an exception to the rule. In the latest SO dump, more than 400K questions were labeled with tags related to mobile technologies. Although, previous works have analyzed the main topics and trends in SO threads, there are no studies devoted specifically to mobile development. In this paper we used topi… Show more

“…The usage of tags for filtering the questions is justified as we are using the generic tags (as described in Section 3.2) that differentiate between different mobile development platforms. We used the mobile development related tags shortlisted in prior work [10] to a create subset of the data (Step 7) from the three datasets that we had. The tags are: android, bada, blackberry, iphone, ios, java-me, phonegap, symbian, tizen, webos, and windows-phone.…”

“…However, mobile-related questions in SO are not only related to programming, and there is no existing empirical evidence of specific causes that motivate mobile developers to find and/or provide answers in a Q&A system like SO. A study by Linares-Vásquez et al [25] suggests that hot-topics in SO mobile development related questions include general topics such as device compatibility and IDE-related issues, and specific topics related to database, media, and maps programming. For instance, two examples of questions in SO with more than 700 votes as of January 2013, are the Permission to make digital or hard copies of all or part of this work for personal or classroom use is granted without fee provided that copies are not made or distributed for profit or commercial advantage and that copies bear this notice and the full citation on the first page.…”

“…Stevens et al [19] used Stack Overflow to study the relationship between the popularity of a permission and the number of times a permission is overused in an app. Similarly, Vasquez et al [10] used Stack Overflow posts related to mobile development to understand the issues discussed by mobile app developers. In a similar vein, we also used Stack Overflow to identify security-related APIs.…”
