An exploration into occupational stress experienced by HIV health care professionals who work within genitourinary medicine settings.

Abstract: The present study investigates the occupational stress of health care workers involved with HIV care in genitourinary medicine (GUM) outpatient departments. Sixteen nursing and 14 medical staff completed the P. Gray-Toft and J. G. Anderson (1981) occupational stress inventory. “…The original Nurse Stress Scale (NSS), developed by Gray-Toft and Anderson (1981), has 34 items in seven subscales, whereas the expanded one has 59 items in nine subscales. The scoring of the NSS is the summation of scores of items in one subscale or scale (Huengsberg, Vedhara, Nott, & Bradbeer, 1998;Parker et al, 2004). According to Gray-Toft and Anderson (1981), each item is scored from 0 (never experienced) to 3 (frequently experienced).…”

“…Furthermore, two methods were used in data analysis. If the study compared two groups, parametric tests-such as t test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA; e.g., Huengsberg et al, 1998)-and nonparametric tests (e.g., Escot, Artero, Gandubert, Boulenger, & Ritchie, 2001) were used. If the study focused on the correlation of two or more variables in one group, multiple regression analysis and correlation analysis were used (e.g., Bowman & Stern, 1995;Lambert, Lambert, & Ito, 2004).…”

“…In situations where the tasks that are demanded from labor are in contradictory and ambiguous with each other, it can cause frustration and hence, stress among the workers (Beehr, Jex, Stacy, & Murray, 2000;Smither, 1998). Role and task which have characteristics features of contradiction and ambiguity brings about tension, fatigue, truancy, non-feedback behavior, and psychological strain among workers (Decker & Borgen, 1993;Huensberg, Vedhara, Nott, & Bradbeer 1998;Breaugh, 1980).…”
