An Experimental Study on the Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Performances of a Bio-Inspired UAV Propeller

Abstract: Under rapid development, the small UAV is facing two essential problems: aerodynamics efficiency and noise emission. In this work, the aerodynamic and aeroacoustics characteristics of a novel bio-inspired UAV propeller with the unique planform shape inspired by the cicada wing and maple seed was experimentally investigated by comparing with conventional baseline propeller at hover flight condition. The design thrust (3N) and solidity (0.12) are kept same for both propellers. The aerodynamics forces and sound m… Show more

“…[157]. The advantages of PIV in obtaining either statistical or time-resolved information in 2D and 3D are assessed also in many industrial configurations for the study of landing-gear noise (as for example by Neuhart et al [158] and Brès et al [159]) or for rotor configurations [160][161][162][163][164][165]. In figure 13, the results from Wang et al [166] show a peculiar usage of PIV measurements.…”

“…Based on Ning and Hu, 21 the chord length from the largest chord on the planform to the propeller’s tip decreased linearly. It was calculated by Cr=Ctip/r, where Cr is the chord length at the corresponding radius location, and r represents a non-dimensional radial distance.…”

“…Hintz et al 20 presented experimental research findings to determine the influence of a bio-inspired blade planform on small-scale propeller thrust and energy consumption. Ning and Hu 21 examined a small propeller’s aerodynamic and aeroacoustic properties with a novel planform shape inspired by the maple seed by comparing it to a typical baseline propeller in hover flight. They showed that the bioinspired propeller could provide equivalent thrust with constant power input while emitting less noise.…”
