An Experimental Study on the Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustic Characteristics of Small Propellers

Abstract: A preliminary experimental study was carried out to investigate the aerodynamics and aeroacoustic characteristics of small propellers. A baseline propeller with 120mm radius was designed at first, and four different saw-tooth serrated trailing edges were added to the baseline propeller. The heights (2h) of the saw-tooth serration are 6mm, and the width to height ratio (λ/h) are 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, and 1.2, respectively. The aerodynamic forces, sound pressure level, and detailed flow field structures are achieved vi… Show more

“…They have received unprecedented attention in the past decade due to their adoption in military usage [1], civil applications [2], and scientific research applications [3,4]. Most studies on multirotor sUAS focus on control and photography functions [5] while little research is related to aerodynamics or aeroacoustics. Although the case, aerodynamics, and aeroacoustics of multirotor sUAS should not be disregarded.…”

“…Note there exist some discrepancy between the propellers pitch angels described in Ref. [45] and [18] even though the reported aerodynamics characteristics were identical * . This discrepancy with the propeller geometry could have contributed to the overall over-prediction of thrust from the VBM simulation as seen in Fig.…”

“…Ning et al [50] also carried out an experimental analysis on STE, the aim being to reduce noise while maintaining the thrust constant. This work defines three parameters that ensure a beneficial employment of serration for noise reduction.…”
