An experimental study on the dimensional accuracy of holes made by abrasive waterjet machining of Hardox steels

Abstract: Abstract. The manufacturing process of special steels like Hardox is usually difficult. Abrasive waterjet cutting (AWJ) is one of the machining processes which can be used in this case, with good results, as proved in previous research of the authors. This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of the AWJ main process parameters to the dimensional accuracy of holes manufactured in Hardox steels. The experiments were conducted using a L8(2 4 ) fractional factorial design matrix considering four p… Show more

“…The studied problem is close to the tailback and the taper investigations performed in the past by Hashish [16] or Ma and Deam [28]. Precise experiments studying surface quality on the selected process parameters of the Hardox steel plates cutting were revealing the traverse speed as the most important parameter influencing the accuracy of AWJ cutting were performed previously [11][12][13].…”

“…Sutowska et al [11] studied the influence of cutting parameters on the kerf quality in detail. Some of the recent experiments were performed on Hardox TM 400, 450, and 500 steel plates by Filip, Vasiloni, and Mihail [12,13].…”

“…In previous researches the authors of the present paper showed that AWJ can be successfully used for machining parts made of special materials like Hardox [10] or special structures like aluminium honeycomb panels [11]. The dimensional precision of the parts was analysed and conclusions were made.…”

“…The principle of generating high pressures using a multiplier is based on the difference of the surfaces of two pistons firmly connected to each other [ 9 , 10 ]. Flexibility and cold cutting are some of the most advantageous properties of abrasive water jets, as well as the fact that this is an effective tool for cutting various materials including extremely hard or soft materials and composites and sandwich materials that are difficult to machine using traditional technologies [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ].…”
