To strengthen concrete or masonry, a modern technique uses adherent strips made of Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP). A model problem for this is here considered, represented by an elastic stiffener pulled at one end, in adhesive contact with an elastic half space in generalized plane stress. An analytical solution is developed under the hypothesisà la Baranblatt that cohesive adhesion forces remain active between the two materials when relative slip occurs (provided this is less than a critical value), so that the stress singularity predicted by the theory of elasticity in the case of perfect bonding is removed. We find that the bond length beyond which no further increase of strength could be achieved, referred to as the effective bond length, coincides in practice with the ultimate length of the cohesive zone, i.e., its maximal extension prior that the critical slip limit is attained. The debonding process in a pull-out experiment is analyzed in detail. Results are in better agreement with experimental data than those obtainable with traditional models, which neglect as a rule the deformation of the substrate.

The objective of this article is to realistically analyze fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) retrofitted reinforced concrete structures under cyclic loading taking into account FRP–concrete bond-slip law with cyclic bond degradation. In literature, even though numerous studies have been conducted in FRP–concrete interface bond-slip modeling under cyclic loads, a small number of them consider the influence of cyclic degradation on FRP–concrete interface bond behavior. Within this framework, the bond-slip law for carbon fiber-reinforced plastics–concrete interface is revised by utilizing Harajli's and Ko-Sato's approaches. The procedure is distinct from others because it develops existing deficiencies of these approaches, whereas a more reliable modeling process is proposed for use in practice. Conventional bond-slip law of Lu et al. is compared with this interface relationship stated in this investigation and the difference is clearly shown in terms of structural parameters. Experimental tests are conducted at the same time for verification. It is proved that cyclic bond degradation affects the interface behavior; thus, the structural response cannot be omitted in structural evaluations. Structural performance measures are obtained in good agreement for each level of cycles. The technique proposed clearly exhibits structural response difference between monotonic and cyclic loadings while good agreement is reached with experimental results. POLYM. Effective bonding between the adherents plays a key point when dealing with the retrofit of concrete structures by using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs). However, lack of adequate studies on the long-term performance of the bond behavior of FRP-concrete interface under harsh environments will inhibit their application in the repair of aged structures. Therefore in this study, 60 double-lap shear-bonded FRPconcrete composite specimens were designed and tested under wet-dry cycles and sustained loading. The effect of FRP type (GFRP and CFRP), wet-dry cycling times (0-360 days) and sustained loading level (0-60% of the ultimate load of the control specimen) on the failure modes, stress transfer, and local bondslip curves of the composite specimens were investigated. The experimental results showed that wet-dry cycling exposure changed the failure mode of the composite specimens from the concrete substrate to the adhesive-concrete interface, further extended the local debonding area and decreased the ultimate strains of composite specimens from 12,000 to 8,000 lE. The degree of the degradation will be further increased under the combined effect of sustained loading and wet-dry exposure. The effects of FRP type, wet-dry cycling times and sustained loading level on the fracture energy of the specimens were quantitatively analyzed. A regression model was then proposed that was able to predict the fracture energy after environment exposure with reasonable accuracy, which can provide a reference for the design of bond durability factors in relevant specifications, such as ACI 440R-08 POLYM.
