Based on the dimensional accuracy measured in vitro, the optical bite registration was shown to be more effective in single posterior restorations in comparison with the conventional physical method using silicone material. SUMMARYThe dimensional accuracy of optical bite registration in the CEREC system was compared to that of the conventional physical method in vitro using a bite registration material. Maxillary and mandibular full-arch dentate epoxy models mounted on an articulator were used to measure the interarch distance and the angles created by the occlusal planes. The preparations for a single restoration on the maxillary first molar or for multiple restorations on the maxillary posterior quadrant were made on the model. Optical impression and bite registration data were collected to construct virtual models using computer-aided design software. A silicone material was used for the physical method, and the dimensional accuracy was measured by means of the coordinate measuring machine. The discrepancy relative to the baseline before preparation was analyzed in each registration record. For the single restoration, the optical method created a mean discrepancy of 243.2 lm relative to baseline at the prepared tooth, which was insignificantly but slightly lower than the mean discrepancy of 311.1 lm obtained with the physical method. The mean rotational deviation in the horizontal plane was significantly lower for the optical method. For the multiple preparations, the optical method showed significantly larger discrepancy on the right molar and on the left premolar and molar sites. In the frontal view, the optical method created significantly larger rotational deviation than the physical method. The result indicates that the optical bite registration was effective in terms of dimensional accuracy for single posterior restorations.

Reproducibility of habitual intercuspation in vivo

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this in vivo study was to investigate how reproducible individuals find their habitual intercuspation. METHODS: A new type of highly accurate measuring procedure was involved using an intraoral optical scanning device (Cerec Bluecam). First, a pilot test investigated the accuracy of the procedure within a standardized setting. With regard to the in vivo study, fifteen participants with full dentition were selected. For each of these individuals, eight scans were taken both in the morning and in the afternoon. Furthermore, during each session, scans were taken both in horizontal and upright position. In order to compare this to ubiquitous used processes, plaster replicas of five individuals were investigated as well. The scans were analysed, and the differences in the position of the lower jaw were calculated by a specialized superimposition program (n=570 comparisons/OraCheck). RESULTS: The results showed that there was no significant difference between the time of day and the position of the patient. The overall mean±SD value for locating the habitual intercuspation was 42±34m, however ranging from 22±9m to 77±58m for single individuals. On the other hand, the differences in positioning plaster replicas reached a mean of 135±77m. CONCLUSIONS: The reproducibility of the habitual intercuspation can be obtained under in vivo conditions by a newly developed and highly accurate measuring procedure. Individuals with full dentition show values in average of 42m. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Determining the occlusal jaw relation is an important precondition in restorative dentistry and many methods are proposed for a proper occlusal registration. Although much is known about in vitro accuracy of these techniques, little is known how reproducible the habitual occlusal position itself is found between individuals.

Clinical evaluation of interocclusal recording materials in bilateral free end cases

Five combinations of materials commonly used for intermaxillary records in cases of bilateral free end saddle were evaluated: acrylic resin base + wax; acrylic resin base + wax + ZOE paste; acrylic resin base + wax + Duralay resin; condensation silicone; and acrylic resin plate + irreversible hydrocolloid. The materials were evaluated by measuring the vertical distance between pairs of reference points located on the bases of the upper and lower articulated casts. The measurements obtained by manual articulation of the casts were used as the standards to which the measurements obtained with the recording materials were compared. ANOVA revealed significant differences among the materials and the Tukey's test showed that condensation silicone differed significantly (p<0.05) from the acrylic resin + wax combination, while no significant differences (p>0.05) were observed among the remaining materials. The condensation silicone presented the greatest differences from the measurements obtained by manual articulation of the casts whereas the acrylic resin base + wax combination presented the least differences. Based on the findings of this study, the following scale of fidelity can be settled from best to worst: acrylic resin base + wax; acrylic resin plate + alginate; acrylic resin base + wax + ZOE; acrylic resin base + wax + Duralay; and condensation silicone.
