An experimental study of the characteristics of a Darrieus turbine for tidal power generation

Abstract: The Darrieus turbine was initially developed for wind turbines. An example of its application to water turbines is found in the Darrieus turbine installed in a duct for low head power generation, but no example is known of its application in a natural water channel. The authors have developed a Darrieus turbine that is suitable for tidal current power generation with the aim of establishing tidal current power generation technology through demonstrations in test channels and oceans. The efficiency of tidal cur… Show more

“…Among them, the 300kW generator unit (Seaflow) and the 2600kW generator unit (Seagen) developed by Marine Current Turbine(MCT) Company in England [4] as well as the 300kW generator unit researched by Hammerfest Strom Company in Norway [5] belong to the horizontal axis type. While the vertical shaft type units have been studied by Sandia National Laboratory [6], GCK Technology Company [7] and Koju Hiraki Company in Japan [8].…”

“…After the rotor, another main component is blade, many attempts have been made on theoretical and experimental study of blade design [6][7][8][9][10] and there are outcomes that on increasing the number of blades, the solidity of the turbine increases and induced torque is higher. This reduces the start problem of the turbine.…”
