An Experimental MM-Wave Path Length Modulator

Abstract: A modulation scheme in which the transmission path length of the mmwaoe signal is digitally modulated by means of a PIN diode switch has been proposed for the waveguide transmission system. To demonstrate the feasibility of this proposal, a complete transmitter has been developed in the 50 ~ 60-GHz range, consisting of an IMPATT oscillator, circulator, PIN diode switch, and its driver circuit. The model can handle signals at SOO Mb/s and deliver 100 mW of modulated power at the output. This paper describes the… Show more

“…For the case of complex-to-complex matching, which is referred to the matching of interstage components as shown in Fig. 4(b) (for example, the PD with one of the HCs), we contribute here a generalization of the procedure stated in [28][29][30]. Herein the two hyperbolic means of the components named A and B are computed and then are complex conjugate matched together via the addition of a properly assessed interconnecting transmission line.…”

“…In the current section, the improved matching methodology for the HCs and PD and its interrelation with the miniaturization approach are stated. Broadband matching, applied in general to diode-mixers design [28][29][30], is adopted and extended herein for matching passive devices. In mixer design, although a wideband operation is sought, the diode impedance changes with time driven by the local oscillator large signal as well as with frequency.…”

“…9 A "doping well" is formed by the shallow p + indiffusion and steep doping tail from the n + substrate. This constitutes an optimum structure from the standpoint of maximum breakdown voltage, minimum capacitance per unit area, low resistance, and fast switching speed.…”
