This paper discusses a sustainable way to prepare construction materials from metallurgical slags. Steel slag, copper slag, lead-zinc slag, and electric furnace ferronickel slag are the most common metallurgical slags that could be used as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and aggregates. However, they have some adverse effects that could significantly limit their applications when used in cement-based materials. The setting time is significantly delayed when steel slag is utilized as an SCM. With the addition of 30% steel slag, the initial setting time and final setting time are delayed by approximately 60% and 40%, respectively. Because the specific gravity of metallurgical slags is 10–40% higher than that of natural aggregates, metallurgical slags tend to promote segregation when utilized as aggregates. Furthermore, some metallurgical slags deteriorate the microstructure of hardened pastes, resulting in higher porosity, lower mechanical properties, and decreased durability. In terms of safety, there are issues with the soundness of steel slag, the alkali-silica reaction involving cement and electric furnace ferronickel slag, and the environmental safety concerns, due to the leaching of heavy metals from copper slag and lead-zinc slag.

Global copper slag (CS) emissions reached 57.2 million tons in 2021. Despite the increasing reuse of CS, the treatment of CS is still dominated by landfill so far, which not only occupies land resources but also causes damage to the environment. The application of CS to cement-based materials (CBMs) is one of the main approaches to its comprehensive utilization and has important economic and social implications. This article reviews the physicochemical properties, activity excitation, and heavy metal leaching properties of CS and summarizes the effect of CS on the working properties, mechanical properties, and durability of CBMs. At the end of the article, the existing problems in the research are analyzed, and the development trend is proposed, which provides technical guidance and reference for further research and application of CS in CBMs in the future.

From some decades the production and use of concrete has been increased. The manufacturing process of concrete as well as the three main ingredients emits lots of harmful gas like CO2 which directly harm the environment. In this study, relevant study done on the fine aggregate and cement replacement with egg shell powder & copper slag were discussed. Also effect of cement and fine aggregate replacement on compressive strength and durability of concrete had been discussed. From study it has been observed that the egg shell powder and the copper slag can’t affect much the durability and strength parameters up to 6% and 40% replacement of cement and fine aggregate. Also observed that copper slag and egg shell powder reduced impact of concrete on environment but still need to improve the manufacturing process of copper slag.
