An Experience with Electronic Laboratory Notebooks in Real-World, Client-Based BME Design Courses

Abstract: is an Associate Faculty Associate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He began here as student near the start of the UW-BME program and earned his BS, MS, and PhD in BME. He is interested in hands-on instruction-teaching and developing courses related to biomaterials and tissue engineering, as well as design. He was awarded the BMES Student Chapter Teaching Award in 2011 and 2013 and the Polygon Outstanding BME Instructor Award in 2012.

“…This is much higher than the figures reported in the literature, where it was claimed that less than 5% of academic labs use ELNs [30]. In fact, this finding is acutely different to previous results from a Biomedical Engineering Laboratory surveying 200 students (sophomore and senior) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison [41], where 98% of students confirmed they never used them. Clearly, our students in China were aware of ELNs and have used them in the past.…”

“…After consulting with other staff members in pedagogical research within the College of Science and Engineering, we developed an online survey to evaluate the effectiveness of ELNs via 20 carefully constructed questions, which were tested for clarity and relevance. Our survey questions were adapted from validated ELN questionnaires by Walsh [37], Riley [39], Puccinelli [41] and Okon [42], as well as general software questionnaires developed by Conde [5] and Jung [43]. Each of the previous ELN investigations relied on testing a particular ELN product.…”

“…A link to the Monash University LabArchives electronic notebook, which Monash has implemented for higher degree supervision in 2016, provides this capacity. Eblen-Zayas (2015) has outlined the reasons for switching to Electronic notebooks and the considerations in selecting ELN software, while Puccinelli and Nimunkar (2014) reported instructor and student experiences and feedback from using Electronic Laboratory Notebooks in real world design courses. The electronic notebook offers a shared environment for students and supervisors to interact within, and for supervisors to keep track of their students' work, as well as an environment for independent work by students.…”
