“…Individuals with high levels of depression tend to have low levels of motivation ( Xiao et al, 2021 ) and self-efficacy ( King, Wu, & Niranjan, 2014 ; Melo et al, 2021 ), less control of their cognition and behaviors ( Zhang et al, 2020 ), and poor performance ( Son & Won, 2017 ). Also, depression contributes to weaken self-regulation, often influencing the ability to organize time and study environment, and to regulate emotion and effort, which may lead to decreases in learning engagement and performance ( Hinkson Jr. et al, 2021 ). Similarly, Xie et al (2020) reported the negative impact of depression on time management in nursing management, while Van Nguyen, Laohasiriwong, Saengsuwan, Thinkhamrop, and Wright (2015) found negative relationships between depression and resource management strategies among medical students.…”

“…Rates of PTSD are even higher among certain college subgroups, including student veterans. In a large national sample of 628 student veterans, nearly half (45.9%) endorsed significant symptoms of PTSD (i.e., PTSD Checklist [PCL]-Military Version score of 28 or higher; Rudd et al, 2011), and recent data indicate that 51.3% meet criteria for probable PTSD (i.e., PCL-5 score cutoff 33 or greater; Hinkson et al, 2021). Compared to the lifetime prevalence rate of PTSD diagnosis in the general population (5.7%; Kessler et al, 2012), the prevalence of PTSD symptoms among college students is of particular concern to academic institutions given the disorder’s impact on functional impairment, including educational functioning and outcomes (Boyraz et al, 2016; Morissette et al, 2019).…”

“…Veterans aged 18-34 have the highest suicide rate, which has steadily increased for nearly two decades (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2020a). Research has shown that 18% of student veterans have had thoughts of suicide, 9% have seriously considered suicide as an option (Hinkson et al, 2021), and 6-8% of student veterans have reported a past suicide attempt (Borsari et al, 2017;Hinkson et al, 2021). Therefore, suicidality is a serious concern within the student veteran population, and the university administration must consider ways to support this group.…”

“…Student veterans are susceptible to various mental health concerns and stressful experiences, including suicidality (Borsari et al, 2017;Hinkson et al, 2021;Schonfeld et al, 2015). Suicide is a leading cause of veteran deaths in the United States (US Department of Veterans Affairs, 2020a).…”
