An Examination of the Factor Structure and Scale Reliability of the Work Motivation Scale, the Motivation Sources Inventory

Abstract: This study examined the factor structure and scale reliability of the Motivation Sources Inventory (MSI; Barbuto & Scholl, 1998), an instrument designed to measure the motivational concepts contained within the meta‐theory of motivation (Leonard, Beauvais, & Scholl, 1999). Participants were comprised of financial‐service professionals, health‐industry administrators, and retail and distribution workers, all engaged in full‐time employment in Ireland. Data were collected through the administration of the Motiva… Show more

“…Research is based on the growing awareness that traditional motivation models fail to explain and predict human behavior diversity, especially in the workplace. Leonard et al try to overcome its weakness by presenting a meta-theory of work motivation (Ryan, 2010). Achievement motivation observes that someone approaches a new task with a learning goal orientation, while others approach a task with a goal in the right way, namely obtaining favorable assessments or avoiding negative judgments from others (Reio & Ghosh, 2009).…”

“…The metatheory of motivation allows for the examination of workplace motivation as a multidimensional and complex phenomenon. To date, the theory has been applied successfully in both the theoretical and empirical study of workplace motivation to aid our understanding of the relationships between workplace motivation and a variety of workplace phenomena (Barbuto and Xu, ; Barbuto and Story, ; Kooij et al., ; Muller et al., ; Young, ; Ryan, , ). The theory is particularly effective in its recognition of the degree of personal difference that exists across workers whose motives may stem variously from the five motivational sources contained within the metatheory.…”

“…Empirical evidence is also available (Ryan, 2010) on the existence of different sources of motivation such as goal internalisation, self-concept internal motivation, intrinsic process motivation, instrumental motivation and self-concept external motivation. The extent to which these motivational sources could explain different leadership behaviours among top management in a corporate environment has been established (Barbuto, 2000).…”
