An Exact Method for Determining the Directivity Index of a General Three-Dimensional Array

Abstract: An exact method for determining the directivity index of a general three-dimensional array with phased elements is described. The expression for the reciprocal of the directivity factor is shown to be a sum of terms which are simple functions of the sensitivity, phasing, and location of the elements of the array. As an example, the method is applied to a sixteen-element plane array.
