An Evaluation of Three Approximate Item Response Theory Models for Equating Test Scores1

Abstract: The primary purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which three item response theory (IRT) models could be used to approximate the threeparameter logistic model in estimating item parameters and in equating test scores. These approximate models were less expensive to apply and in some cases used less data than the full-blown three-parameter model. The approximations to the three-parameter model used in this study were(1) the Rasch one-parameter model, as operationalized in the BICAL computer progra… Show more

“…However, under similar conditions, Yen (1981) found that the 2PL model fit the data almost as well as the 3PL model. In both of these studies, the IPL model provided poor fit except when data were simulated to fit the 1PL model, Previous studies by Marco, Wingersky, and Douglass (1985) and Hicks (1984) suggested that a M1PL model produced equating results that compared favorably with equating results based on the 3PL model. However, it should be noted that these studies employed designs where a test was equated to itself through a series of "chains."…”

“…Dorans (1985) contributed a book chapter on item parameter invariance. Douglass et al (1985) studied the use of approximations to the 3PL model in item parameter estimation and equating. Methodology for comparing distributions of item responses for two groups was contributed by Rosenbaum (1985).…”

“…Wingersky (1983, 1984) compared IRT truescore linking with equipercentile equating using observed scores and concluded that the two methods yield almost identical results. Douglass et al (1985) studied the extent to which three approximations to the 3PL model could be used in item parameter estimation and equating. Although these approximations yielded accurate results (based on their circular equating criteria), the authors recommended further research before these methods are used operationally.…”
