An Evaluation of the Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity Test

Abstract: The new Mars Letter Contrast Sensitivity Test shows excellent agreement with the Pelli-Robson test and has similar repeatability. There are subtle differences in the actual contrast levels on different forms of the Mars test, and adjusting for these differences leads to superior repeatability of the Mars test. Thus, the Mars test may be a useful alternative to the Pelli-Robson test offering several advantages, including smaller size, improved durability, and ease of use.

“…Diagnostic performance and feasibility have been studied and compared in several earlier studies. As one example the Mars Letter and the Pelli-Robson test have been compared and equal test scores as well as similar reproducibility [10,22] have been found.…”

“…Consistent with previous studies, the low-vision subjects gave less repeatable contrast sensitivity scores than individuals with normal vision. 6,8 Given the 95% limits of agreement for the iPad test shown in Fig. 1, a change of 0.25 log units, or five letters, could be regarded as clinically meaningful.…”

“…11,12,13 With regard to contrast sensitivity (CS), although the Pelli-Robson 14 chart is considered the gold standard to compare CS tests based on optotypes, 15 currently there is not a commercial gold standard test to measure CSF by sinusoidal gratings. An alternative could be to measure CSF using a computer-driven cathode ray tube (CRT), but CSF depends on several test parameters such as the psychophysical method, therefore differences may be found depending on the selected parameters.…”
