An Evaluation of the Ability of Priscoline, Regitine, and Roniacol to Overcome Vasospasm in Normal Man

Abstract: This paper is a study of the comparative efficacy of Priscoline, Regitine, and Roniacol in relaxing vasospasm in the extremities of normal human subjects. A total of 60 studies were performed on 14 subjects. Severe cutaneous vasospasm was induced by exposure of the lightly clad subject to an environmental temperature of 20 C. for one hour or more. In half the tests the severe vasospasm was reduced to moderate vasospasm by application of heat to the torso of the chilled subjects. The effectiveness of the drugs … Show more

“…No doubt the vasodilatation involved other tissues too, as suggested by the feeling of a stuffed nose by all of the subjects (cf. Green et al [6]). However, during forearm exercise the forearm blood flow and vascular resistance were not influenced by phentolamine.…”

“…Drugs were infused intravenously at a more or less constant rate in 0-85 % sodium chloride solution. Phentolamine, an a-blocker (Roberts, Richardson & Green, 1952;Green, Gobel, Moore & Prince, 1952;Green, 1957), was given a total dose of 30-40 mg over about 20-30 min, during the last 10 min of which the adrenaline was also given. Two ,8blockers were used; the first five subjects received 70-S80 mg of pronethalol (Dornhorst & Robinson, 1962;Black & Stephenson, 1962), and the remaining four subjects about 10 mg of propranalol (Black, Crowther, Shanks, Smith & Dornhorst, 1964), in each case over about 10 min immediately preceding the infusion of adrenaline.…”

“…Kinmonth & Hadfield (120) have advocated preganglionic sympathetic section in preference to ganglionectomy in the treatment o(jRaynaud's disease. Green et al (121) and Green & Grimsley (122) have studied antiadrenergic drugs and find Regitine active in vasospasm and arteriosclerotic disease.…”
