An Evaluation of Semantically Grouped Word Cloud Designs

Abstract: Word clouds continue to be a popular tool for summarizing textual information, despite their well-documented deficiencies for analytic tasks. Much of their popularity rests on their playful visual appeal. In this paper, we present the results of a series of controlled experiments that show that layouts in which words are arranged into semantically and visually distinct zones are more effective for understanding the underlying topics than standard word cloud layouts. White space separators and/or spatially grou… Show more

“…Word clouds are a visual interpretation of words from a text corpus based on their frequency (Jayashankar and Sridaran, 2017). Even though their ostensible deficiencies in regard to scientific data representation remain (Hearst et al , 2019), they are a widely used tool to provide an intuitive way of visualizing the results of a frequency-based text mining process (Jin, 2017).…”

“…Figure A2 shows the judges' success rate in predicting the dish they tasted (left) and the word clouds of the five dishes (right). These word clouds provide visually useful information to see the judges' perceptions [42]. The only dish that had a clear success in its identification was H, with 54 correct identifications out of the possible 70 (Figure A2g).…”

“…We therefore decide to analyze the relative use of words in the titles of the articles (S2 File). Since textual information is difficult to visualize quantitatively [25], we used the Wordle™ software to draw "word clouds" [23]. The "word clouds" give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text.…”
