An Evaluation of Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of periodontal scaling and oral hygiene instruction for patients with mild chronic periodontitis and rheumatoid arthritis through clinical periodontal parameters and laboratory tests for CRP (C- reactive protein) and ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate). Twelve individuals with rheumatoid arthritis and 12 healthy individuals were evaluated, with a mean age of 45.38 and 46.75 respectively, all female and with mild, chronic periodontitis. The participants were evalu… Show more

“…The current study clinical parameters are in agreement with another study (14) who have shown that periodontal therapy in RA patients with chronic periodontitis showed enhancement in clinical parameters as evaluated by periodontal indices and laboratory tests. This may be attributed to the effective removal of infection source by subgingival mechanical debridement.…”

“…Additionally, the relationship between PD and RA status was also described through an increased number of swollen joints, increased level of DAS28‐CRP, and rheumatoid factor in PD patients. A recent study also suggested that periodontal therapies can improve both clinical periodontal parameters and general laboratory testing in RA patients …”

“…In this respect, the lack of association between the prevalence of P. gingivalis or anti‐ P. gingivalis antibodies (e.g., in this study) with relation to RA raises important questions about their participation in the autoimmune process (Scher et al, , Ziebolz et al, ). Furthermore, recent studies have suggested that periodontal treatment alone can generate positive effects in the clinical manifestations of RA patients (Biyikoglu et al, , Okada et al, , Roman‐Torres et al, ); however, these studies have been conducted with small numbers of patients and lack a rigorous evaluation (Kaur, Bright, Proudman, & Bartold, ).…”
