“…A plate fermentation method 15 was used for the detection of acid production from the following carbohydrates: galactose, glucose, lactose, maltose, mannitol, sorbitol, sucrose, trehalose and xylose. A 48 h culture of each isolate was suspended in phosphate buffered saline (PBS, pH 7.5) and the fermentation plates were inoculated with these suspensions.…”

“…(1985) reported that neither strain produced acid from maltose. Hinz & Kun-iiara (1977), who studied strains ATCC 29546 and HIM 789-5, and previous studies from this laboratory (Blackall & Reid, 1982;Blackall, 1983), in which only strain ATCC 29546 was examined, reported the opposite. The results of the current study provide an explanation for this disagreement, as 11 isolates of H. avium, including strains ATCC 29546 and HIM 789-5, produced acid from maltose only in the presence of chicken serum.…”

“…The ability of the strains to produce acid from a range of carbohydrates was tested using a previously described replica-plating technique (Blackall, 1983). The carbohydrates used were : Larabinose, D-fructose, D-galactose, D-glucose, D-lactose, maltose, D-mannitol, D-mannose, D-sorbitol, D-trehalose and D-xylose.…”

“…Test medium agar without glucose and starch was used for the carbohydrate fermentation test (Blackall, 1983). While the Kume haemagglutinin serotyping system achieves a more detailed typing, recognizing nine serovars grouped into A, B and C serogroups (Blackall et al, 1990a), we chose to use the Page serotyping scheme (Page, 1962) because it is the most widely used serological classification scheme for H. paragallinaru m.…”
