An evaluation of bladder emptying methods and the effect of demographic and clinical factors on spontaneous voiding frequency in stroke patients

Abstract: In this study, the bladder emptying methods at different stages of the post-stroke period along with the effects of demographic and clinical parameters on spontaneous voiding frequency were investigated. The frequencies of bladder emptying methods at admission to the rehabilitation clinic, after neurourological and urodynamic assessment and at home after discharge were spontaneous voiding (SV) 51/99 (51.5 %), 62/99 (62.6 %), 73/99 (73.7 %), emptying without a urinary catheter + an external collector system (EW… Show more

“…Those with storage and voiding problems together were accepted as mixed type. 8,9 The presence of involuntary spontaneous and/or provocative detrusor contractions during the filling phase was considered as overactive detrusor, and the failure of normal bladder emptying due to decreased detrusor contraction power and/or duration was considered as underactive detrusor. While detrusor contraction was observed during urination, the absence of loosening of sphincter electromyography or an increase in activity was accepted as DSD.…”

“…LUTD was found to be associated with various risk factors such as lesion location and size, old age, female gender, comorbid diseases (ischemic heart disease, hypertension, diabetes mellitus. 8,9 In other studies, in addition to this situation, the patient's disability, high risk of falling, low quality of life, low social participation and its relationship with depression have been reported. 1012 Therefore, in stroke rehabilitation, gaining functional independence and minimizing disability should be one of the basic principles of the rehabilitation programme to prevent symptoms and possible complications related to neurogenic bladder involvement.…”
