An Evaluation Framework for the Dual Contribution of Action Research: Opportunities and Challenges in the Field of Operations Management

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to analyze the dual contribution of action research (AR) both for research as well as business practice, and how this methodology puts into practice a win-win collaboration between researchers and practitioners. In order to get this, we define three specific objectives: first, we develop an evaluation framework to assess the contribution of AR methodology for research and practitioners in the field of management. Second, we use this framework to evaluate the dual contribution of AR in … Show more

“…In addition, it should include the reasons and motives, both for the decisions made in the unit of analysis and for the academic or professional conclusions (takeaways) derived from the case report. This is relevant if it is a case study report, but even more so if it is an action research (in which case, blocks of additional information specific to one of the 8 steps of the action research methodology can be incorporated) (Alfaro-Tanco et al, 2021;Marin-Garcia et al, 2018;Marin-Garcia et al, 2020)).…”

“…Because of this qualitative methodology, both the researchers’ team and organizational agents collaborate by sharing ideas and reflections. In this study, we apply AR in terms of “diagnosis” and “proposals” for two types of contributions (Alfaro-Tanco et al ., 2021). During the “diagnosis” phase, AR contributes to describing and analyzing a particular issue, in our case, identifying how to design a horizontal network collaboration.…”

“…Much remains to be learned in this methodological direction; accordingly, this paper adopts an action research network-case study. This research approach is original in this field: there are no research references (based on the systematic literature review by Alfaro-Tanco et al ., 2021) that use these typologies to analyze dual contributions for research and practitioners.…”

“…Thus, AR is usually linked to “solving problems.” An AR trend is to develop studies where the practitioner’s contribution implies diagnosing or planning reports related to a specific and relevant issue for the firm/organization. Alfaro-Tanco et al (2021) highlight that:…”
