“…The prevalences of hearing loss for the other two Asian Tigers (ie, Singapore and Hong Kong) were slightly higher, at 14.6% (95% CI 10.0-19.2) and 15.3% (95% CI 10.3-20.4), respectively. The high prevalence of hearing loss in India, which, along with Pakistan and Bangladesh, is one of the most populated countries in the world, is supported by the findings of Garg et al [ 33 ]. Similar hearing loss prevalences were found in most Western and Central European countries, which were slightly higher than Australia (11.4%, 95% CI 9.8-13.0) and Canada (12.2%, 95% CI 10.4-13.9) but lower than that in the United States (14.6%, 95% CI 13.9-15.4).…”

“… 17 In Finland, a population-based HI study involving 55–64-year-old adults reported that the prevalence of HI was 18.4%. 18 However, the prevalence of HI among ≥65 years old women in Brazil was 39.4%, 19 and the total prevalence of HI was 38.8% in rural India, 20 which was much higher than that in developed countries. Previous studies have indicated that the level of economic development affects the prevalence of HI.…”

“…The prevalence of HL ranged from 6% to 26.9% and DHL ranged from 4.5% to 18.32%. [32][33][34][36][37][38][39][40][41] The largest of these studies was conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) in 1983, 33 which reported a prevalence of 10.2%. Studies with a smaller sample size reported a higher prevalence.…”

“…The rural population had higher HL numbers across all studies. 33,34,36,37,[39][40][41] The difference in rural and urban areas when evaluating DHL was smaller but substantial nonetheless 36,37,39,40 (Table V). Predictably, older populations had higher prevalence of hearing impairment compared to the young.…”
