An epidemiological study of caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) in breeder goats from Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: Caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) is a retrovirus that infects goats. This study evaluated the prevalence of CAEV in breeder goats from the states of Maranhão, Ceará, Piauí, Alagoas, Sergipe, Rio Grande do Norte, and Paraíba. We collected a total of 531 serum samples from 251 properties. On average, two male breeder goats were examined from each farm. Results from western blotting demonstrated that the prevalence of CAEV was 6.2% (32/513). In each state, the following prevalence values were found: Pi… Show more

“…Studies report the occurrence of CAE and MV in various states of Brazil, with seroreactivity ranging from 0.29% to 17.6% (Bandeira et al, 2009;Sousa et al, 2019;Dorneles et al, 2020). The low seroreactivity to SRLV detected in the present study corroborates other studies performed in the northeastern region of Brazil.…”

“…These facts consequently tend to make the diagnosis difficult, even when using a more sensitive technique such as the WB (Peixoto et al, 2021), which has been proven to be a good tool for the early diagnosis of anti-SRLV antibodies and is used in several studies on this theme (Peixoto et al, 2018a;Sousa et al, 2019;Araújo et al, 2020;Damasceno et al, 2020).…”

“…In Brazil, de Sousa et al (2019) described a rate of 6.2% infected animals in the northeast region, with the incidence of the disease occurring in 11.2% of the 251 studied properties. In the region of Rio Grande do Norte, Damasceno et al (2020) described 3.9% of infected animals in 42.6% of herds.…”
