“…Open reduction and internal fixation was carried out in standard operating protocol using an intraoral approach. Out of 40 patients in our study, 30 were male (75%) and this male dominance was also reported by Haug et al 19 The finding of this study suggests that the highest incidence of trauma occurred in the 21-40-year-old age in both the groups. Single fracture occurred in 17 patients (42.5%) and two fractures in 23 patients (57.5%) in our study and this is in agreement with the study done by Ellis et al 20 as he encountered single fracture in 32.2% patients and two fractures in 61% patients.…”

“…Estudos subseqüentes apoiaram esta informação 4,5 , mas a tendência dos estudos mais atuais é mostrar um aumento na incidência de VI e sugerem que esta seja a principal etiologia nos traumas de face 6,7 . Leis rigorosas de controle de velocidade, uso obrigatório de cinto de segurança e uso de air bag, quando disponível, são creditados ao decréscimo do número de fraturas faciais devido à AVA 7 .…”

“…Factors such as geographic region, socioeconomic status, and temporal factors including period of the year and area can influence both the type and frequency of injuries in the population 16 . Applying multiple logistic regression analysis, Ribeiro et al 24 (2004) observed that maxillofacial fractures are not related to the employment status, but they are related to the education level.…”

“…Ajagbe et al 2 (1977) states that MVA occur largely because of recklessness and negligence of the driver, poor maintenance of vehicles, often driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and complete disregard of traffic laws. Because of legislative changes and preventive measures involving seat belt and airbag use, as well as the reduction of drinking and driving, MVA-related facial injuries have decreased in some developed countries, and interpersonal violence has emerged as the predominant cause of facial trauma, with alcohol and unemployment as contributing factors 5,16,18,28 . Hogg et al 18 (2000) demonstrated that occupants of vehicles who are not wearing seat belts are injured in crashes at a rate more than five times higher than that of occupants wearing a seat belt.…”
