An epidemiologic study on clonorchiasis and metagonimiasis in riverside areas in Korea

Abstract: A study was carried out to figure the cases and to observe the endemic status of clonorchiasis and metagonimiasis in endemic areas in Korea. Total 13,373 inhabitants living in 40 villages along 7 main rivers and 9 small streams were subjected to stool examination. They were selected randomly among the riverside population. Their specimens were examined both by cellphane thick smear method and Stoll's egg countung technique. This study was performed during the period from May 1979 to April 1980. The results obt… Show more

“…In Korea, the endemic areas are found along the middle or lower reaches of major rivers but the disease is rare in the upper reaches, where the snail intermediate host of C. sinensis is absent (Seo et al, 1981). The endemic focus of the present study, a village in Koesan-gun, is in the middle reaches of the Hangang (River) and the non-endemic focus, a village in Pyongchang-gun, is in the upper reaches of this same river.…”

“…The rate of clonorchiasis in areas of endemic infection is greater in aged people and in men than in the younger age groups and in women (93,99,102). The rate of positive results in fecal examination generally reaches a maximum in the age group from 50 to 59 years.…”

“…Human infections were reported from Japan, Korea, Siberia, Israel, the Balkan states, and Spain [6]. In the Republic of Korea, almost all large and small streams in eastern and southern coastal areas are endemic foci of metagonimiasis [4,222,223]. The Sumjin, Tamjin, and Boseong Rivers, Geoje Island, and Osip Stream (Gangwon-do) were the highest endemic areas with 20-70% egg positive rates in the villagers [2,222,224,225].…”
