The functioning of natural ecosystems supporting the most important biogeochemical cycles of the planet, including the carbon cycle, is considered. These cycles form the main greenhouse gas fluxes between the earth's surface and the atmosphere, and they determine the water, radiation, and temperature conditions of the land and the system of atmospheric circulation over the continents. Climate regulating eco system functions are shown to change significantly due to large scale anthropogenic transformations of nat ural ecosystems and current climate shifts. A new "ecologocentric" concept of nature management is needed to conserve the natural mechanisms of regulation of the environment and climate. This concept takes into consideration the priority value of environment forming functions of natural ecosystems, including their cli mate regulating functions

This paper focusses on a conceptual overview of ways to address a comprehensive analysis of ecosystem services (ES) in a country as large and heterogeneous as Russia. As a first step, a methodology for assessing the services for the federal subjects of Russia was chosen, i.e., its constituent provinces and similar entities, in physical terms. Russia harbors a great diversity of natural conditions and ecosystems which are suppliers of ES, and likewise a variety of the socio-economic conditions that shape the demand for these services and their consumption. The methodological approach described permits several important tasks to be addressed: the evaluation of the degree of satisfaction of people's needs for ES, the identification of ecological donor and acceptor regions, and zoning of the country's territory for ES assessment. The next step is to prepare a prototype of a National Report on ES in Russia, for which we are presenting the planned structure.

The factors determining the origin and maintenance of a high taxonomic diversity of soil commu nities are discussed by a case study of the key groups constituting the soil saproblock. The bulk of the species richness in the southern Far East is localized to the coniferous-deciduous forests retaining the tertiary ele ments in their flora and ancient relations with the Asian tropical fauna. The roles of the following factors are considered: the long term geographic isolation in the absence of catastrophic climate changes; pyrogenic effects, enhancing formation of isolated survival sites; and abundance of mutagenesis in various pedobiont groups. The high species richness of individual taxocenes in combination with a high topic association in the distribution of closely related and ecologically similar species suggests the absence of competitive exclusion. It has been demonstrated that this phenomenon is determined, on the one hand, by rich resource reserves and their spatial differentiation in the soil-litter stratum and, on the other, by spatial-temporal segregation and dense packing of ecological niches, decreasing competition.
