An Enhanced Firefly Algorithm Using Pattern Search for Solving Optimization Problems

Abstract: Firefly Algorithm (FA) is one of the most recently introduced stochastic, nature-inspired, meta-heuristic approaches used for solving optimization problems. The conventional FA use randomization factor during generation of solution search space and fireflies position changing, which results in imbalanced relationship between exploration and exploitation. This imbalanced relationship causes in incapability of FA to find the most optimum values at termination stage. In the proposed model, this issue has been res… Show more

“…After establishing the light intensity and estimating the attraction of fireflies, the ideal method is to use the objective function to determine the fitness of all fireflies [47]. I(rf ), the light intensity emitted by a firefly, at a distance rf may be detected using physics principles of light and can be formulated using equation ( 5) [59]:…”

“…By building suitable mathematical model according to concrete problems, in order to minimize (sometimes maximize) the fitness function of the concrete problem, many actual engineering problems belong to optimization problems. Examples include structural mechanics, power systems and so on [1], [2].…”

“…Optimization techniques play important role in engineering design, information science, economics management, operational research, and related areas [1], [2]. In computer science and mathematics, a problem is said to be an optimization problem; if, it has many viable solutions and the optimal solution is required to be found among all the feasible solutions by applying the least possible cost [3], [4]. Recently, metaheuristics algorithms have been used to solve many optimization problems.…”
