XML retrieval is facing new challenges when applied to heterogeneous XML documents, where next to nothing about the document structure can be taken for granted. We have developed solutions where some of the heterogeneity issues are addressed. Our fragment selection algorithm selectively divides a heterogeneous document collection into equi-sized fragments with full-text content. If the content is considered too data-oriented, it is not accepted. The algorithm needs no information about element names. In addition, three techniques for fragment expansion are presented, all of which yield a 13-17% average improvement in average precision. These techniques and algorithms are among the first steps in developing document-type-independent indexing methods for the full text in heterogeneous XML collections.

Bilingual code mixed (hybrid) languages has become very popular in India as a result of the spread of Western technology in the form of the television, the Internet and social media. Due to this increase in usage of code-mixed languages in day-to-day communication, the need for maintaining the integrity of Indian languages has arisen. As a result of this need the tool named Hinglish to Pure Hindi and English Translator was developed. The tool translated in three ways, namely, Hinglish to Pure Hindi and Pure English, Pure Hindi to Pure English and vice versa. The tool has achieved accuracy of 91% in giving Hindi sentences as output and of 84% in giving English sentences as output, where the input sentences were in Hinglish. The tool has also been compared with another similar tool in the paper.

Titles of scientific papers often include words that develop definite syntactic patterns around them. In analytical chemistry, these roles are played by frequently used analysisrelated words which demand an object, such as "analysis of", "analyse" or "analysing". Syntactic patterns of the titles including these words were studied paying particular attention to prepositions which were then collectively expressed by Backus Naur Form (BNF) notations. The patterns can be utilised to extract word strings corresponding to analyte, matrix and analytical procedure, which are the main facets through which we grasp the core ideas in analytical chemistry papers. Facet tabulation of extracted words provides a display easier to see and understand than the titles themselves. In addition, this method can be applied to automatic assignment of facet categories to title words; and the word categories may be used for analysis of titles in other diversified syntactic patterns. This approach can be extended to the analysis of article titles in other disciplines.
