Wireless sensor networks(WSNs) are used to monitor the environment where the networks are deployed. The Lifetime of WSNs can be increased by energy-efficient or energy balancing algorithms. Balanced energy consumption among all nodes is the main issue. In this paper, a new energy-efficient unequal clustering routing protocol (EEUCR) has been presented. In this protocol, the area of the network is divided into the number of rings of unequal size and each ring is further divided into a number of clusters. Rings nearer to the base station(BS) have a smaller area and the area of rings keeps on increasing as the distance from BS increases. This helps to balance the energy consumption among the sensor nodes. The nodes with heterogeneous energy are deployed in the network. Nodes nearer to the base station have higher energy as compared to farther nodes. Static clustering is used but cluster heads(CHs) are not fixed and are elected on the basis of the remaining energy of the sensor node. Simulation results are compared with existing protocols and show improvement in energy consumption, which, in turn, increases the network lifetime of WSN and also balance the energy consumption of sensor node

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) draw the attention of researchers due to the diversity of applications that use them. Basically, a WSN comprises many sensor nodes that are supplied with power by means of a small battery installed in the node itself; the node can also be self-charged by a solar cell. Sometimes it is impossible to change the power supply of battery-operated nodes. This dictates that sensor nodes must utilize the energy they have in an optimal manner. Data communication is the main cause of energy dissipation. In this context, designing protocols for WSNs demands more attention to the design of energy-efficient routing protocols that allow communications between sensor nodes and their base station (BS) with the least cost. LEACH is a prominent hierarchical cluster-based routing protocol. It groups sensor nodes into clusters to reduce energy dissipation. On the other hand, LEACH-C is a protocol based on LEACH that claims to improve energy dissipation over LEACH. In this paper, a successful attempt was made to compare these two protocols using MATLAB. The results show that LEACH-C has better performance than LEACH in terms of power dissipation.

Many wireless sensor-based applications use LEACH as a preferred routing protocol owing to its unique features such as optimal sleeping time, minimum packet collisions, dynamic channel selection, and least power consumption. The traditional LEACH protocol wastes the transmission opportunities as it processes data only in an event occurring, leading to wastage of resources. To resolve this issue, this paper proposes a more robust Energy Enhanced Threshold Routing Protocol (ETH-LEACH) for WSNs. The working of ETH-LEACH is conceptualized in two parts. In the first part, TDMA is implemented to estimate the opportunistic paths to remove network overhead. Furthermore, in the second part, a threshold value is calculated for choosing the forwarder nodes. The proposed technique minimizes the energy usage of the sensor nodes and consequently enhances the network's lifetime by extending the duration of node death. The ETH-LEACH protocol is contrasted with the different variants of LEACH to verify its effectiveness. The experimental results show that the proposed ETH-LEACH protocol outperforms the traditional routing protocols. In this paper, the ETH-LEACH protocol performs nearly 54.6% efficient than LEACH, 47.6% efficient than Q-LEACH, 41.3% efficient than NR-LEACH, 33.6% efficient than LEACH-GA, and 29.7% efficient than LEACH-POS in reducing the usage of energy in the overall simulation.
